Doctors Tip:Â Back Pain

Back Pain

Maintaining good posture is key to a healthy back.
To see how your standing posture stacks up, try this posture test. If you're standing properly you should have an S-shaped curve to your spine: It should curve forward at the neck, backward at the upper back, and forward again at the lower back.

 1. Stand in a normal, relaxed stance with your back against a wall. Your upper back, buttocks, and heels should touch the wall.

 2. Slide your hand into the space between your lower back and the wall. It should slide in easily and almost touch both the wall and your back.

 3. If there's no space, you're not allowing your lower back to curve. If there's too much space, you may be over exaggerating the curve.
